How do I set up Gmail on Windows 7?

To set up your Windows Mail client to work with Gmail, just follow these steps:

1. Open Windows Mail. The wizard pops up if it's your first time using it; otherwise, simply click Tools > Accounts > Add.

2. Enter your name, then click Next.

3. Enter your complete email address ([email protected]), and click Next.

4. Choose IMAP input given servers, and check 'Outgoing server requires authentication'; click Next.

5. Enter your full email address ([email protected]) and Google password, and click Next. See here for more information on setting up your Google password.

6. Click through (the checkbox is optional), then click Finish.

7. Select Tools > Accounts > IMAP account, then select Properties > Advanced.

Enter port number '465' next to the 'Outgoing Mail (SMTP)' field and port number '993' next to the 'Incoming mail (IMAP)' field. Check both secure connection boxes, and click Apply.
Click Close.

8. Check Google's recommended client settings, and adjust your client's settings as needed.

IMAP: IMAP (Internet message access protocol) lets you download messages from Gmail so you can access your mail with a program like Outlook Express or Apple Mail. IMAP syncs the actions you take in Outlook Express or Apple Mail with Gmail so if you read a message in your mail client, it'll be marked as read in Gmail.
Domain: A domain is a name for an IP address and is more commonly recognized as a website or web address. For example, Google.com is a domain.

Click on the “Add an e-mail account button located on the left (refer image above), or go to “Tools” -> “Accounts” and hit the “Add” button. Now choose “E-mail Account”.

Whichever path you take, you should get the Add an E-mail Account window similar to one below. Enter your email address, your password and display name. Ensure the “Remember password” box is checked unless you are paranoid about security and want to enter the password every time you access your account. Hit the “Next” button to continue.

You now need to select your incoming mail server type and type in the address and port number (or leave it to the default 110). If your login ID is different from your email address, remember to put it in the corresponding text field and feed in the Outgoing email server address. To continue, click on the “Next” button.

The Windows Live Mail setup process is now complete. You have a choice of setting the new account as the default by checking the box.

When a new email account is added on Windows Live Mail, the program creates 5 new folders – The Inbox, Drafts, Sent items, Junk e-mail and Deleted items – refer image below.

For all you Outlook Express users – The Junk e-mail folder was an included in Windows Mail Vista as a part of the automated junk email filter utility and carried forward to Windows Live Mail email client.

Modifying the Properties of the Email Account

The last step is to modify the properties of the newly set up email account. Right-click on the account in the left panel and select “Properties”. Under the generals tab, enter the reply email address and then shift your attention to the Advanced tab. Uncheck the “Leave a copy of messages on server” unless you really want to store your emails online too.

Before configuring Windows Mail, be sure to enable POP/IMAP access and to do other necessary actions in your Gmail e-mail account. Please follow the steps below:

1. Make sure that you have enabled POP/IMAP access on your Gmail account. See Turn POP and IMAP on and off for users.

2. Change your Gmail account settings to allow less secure apps to access your account. See Let less secure apps access your account. Just login to your Gmail account, and then open the link below:

3. Try sending email, if fails, you must unlock captcha. To do that, just login to your Gmail account, and then open the link below:

How to access Gmail with Windows Mail using POP

1. Open Windows Mail.

2. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.

3. Click Add.

4. Click E‑mail Account, and then click Next.

5. Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the From: field of outgoing messages, and then click Next.

6. Enter your Gmail e-mail address, and then click Next.

7. Fill in all necessary fields to include the following information:

Incoming e-mail server type: POP3

Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server: pop.gmail.com

Outgoing e-mail server (SMTP) name: smtp.gmail.com

Outgoing server requires authentication: enabled

8. Click Next, and then enter your full Gmail e-mail address under E-mail username and your Google password under Password. Click Next.

9. Check the box next to Do not download my e-mail at this time, and then click Finish.

10. On the Internet Accounts screen, make sure that your pop.gmail.com mail account is selected, and then click Properties.

11. On the Servers page, under Outgoing Mail Server, make sure that My server requires authentication box is checked.

12. On the Advanced page, enter 465 in the in the box next to Outgoing mail (SMTP), and check the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL).

13. Check the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL) under Incoming mail (IMAP). The box next to Incoming mail (IMAP) should be automatically updated to 993.

Can I use Gmail with Windows 7?

In Windows 8 or Windows 7, select Associate a file type or protocol with a program and then choose MAILTO under Protocols. Select Google Chrome as the email client and close the window. When you click an email link in MS Edge, a new Google Chrome browser window opens with Gmail.
