Colt McCoy is an award-winning American football quarterback (QB) who began his professional career in the National Football League (NFL) after he was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft. On April 3, 2014, McCoy signed with the Washington Redskins and currently plays for the team.

Daniel “Colt” McCoy, aka Colt McCoy was born on 5th September 1986 in Hobbs, New Mexico, to Steven Brad McCoy and Debra Kay (Woodruff) McCoy. He is the first child of the family.

Colt began playing football at an early age having come from a family of sportsmen. His grandfather, Burl McCoy, was a one-time athlete and women’s basketball coach and presently, a member of the Abilene Christian University (ACU) Sports Hall of Fame while his father was a football coach.

During his days in Jim Ned High School in Tuscola, Texas, the footballer was an outstanding player under coach Brad McCoy, his father. He was a two-time Associated Press 2A Offensive MVP and First-team All-state selection. He also ranks as the all-time leading passer in the history of Texas Division 2A high school and fourth overall in the history of Texas high school.

In 2005, he moved on to the University of Texas at Austin, playing for the Texas Longhorns football team until 2009. As a freshman, he was redshirted but from 2006 to 2009, Colt McCoy was a starter for the team and became the only player in school’s history to either win or share the team’s MVP for all of the four years.

The two-time recipient of the Walter Camp Award who also played for the San Francisco 49ers, holds the Texas school record for most touchdown passes ever thrown by a quarterback in one season and most passing yards and wins. As a result of the records, his No 12 jersey has since been retired.

Within the time he was in Austin, Texas, the superstar QB was actively involved in the institution’s community service program. Being an active member of Church of Christ, Colt attended Westover Hills Church of Christ while in Austin, Texas and the Oldham Lane Church of Christ when he moved to Buffalo Gap. He has also been part of a youth group in the church since 2002.

NFL Career

After playing college football for the University of Texas, Colt McCoy took his football career to the next level by leaving for the 2010 NFL Draft. He was selected in the third round by the Cleveland Browns as the 85th overall pick and on July 23, the two parties sealed an agreement for a four-year contract worth $5 million.

Consequent upon the fact that the team already had three quarterbacks, Mike Holmgren, president of the Cleveland Browns, said it was likely that McCoy would not play his first season with the team so that he can be properly trained as an NFL quarterback. However, fate had a different plan! Starting quarterback Jake Delhomme and backup Seneca Wallace sustained injuries and as a result, McCoy kicked off his NFL career with a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in week 6

In week 11 of the season, Colt McCoy sustained an injury to his ankle while playing against the Jacksonville Jaguars, missed the next three weeks and returned in the 15th week. While playing against the Pittsburgh Steelers in week 14, he also sustained a concussion in a helmet-to-helmet hit with James Harrison, who was subsequently punished.

McCoy, a runner-up and then a finalist for the 2008 and 2009 Heisman Trophy, backed up Browns’ rookie first-round pick Brandon Weeden all through the 2012 season and subsequently completed 9 of 17 pass attempts for 79 yards when Weeden was injured in the game against the Denver Broncos.

The Brown’s traded him on April 1, 2013, to the San Francisco 49ers. The following year, on April 3, 2014, he signed a one-year contract with the Washington Redskins. The contract was re-signed on March 17, 2015, and on March 9, 2016, it was extended to three years.

The quarterback will still be playing for the Redskins in 2019 having signed a one-year, $7 million contract extension with the team.

At the start of his professional career with the Cleveland Browns, Colt McCoy entered into a four-year contract valued at $5 million and went on to receive a signing bonus of $751,000. On April 1, 2013, he was traded to San Francisco alongside a 2013 sixth-round pick in exchange for San Francisco’s 2013 7th and 5th round picks. After this, there was a review of his salary from $1.5 million to $630,000.

In 2014, he signed a 1-year contract worth $795,000, with the Washington Redskins which was increased to $1.5 million in 2015. His average annual salary rose to $3 million in 2016 when the quarterback signed a new three-year deal with the team worth $9 million. On July 26, 2018, Colt McCoy signed a new one-year contract with the Redskins, meanwhile, his 2018 season remains intact from his prior contract. Following his latest contract, $2 million of his $3 million base salary is fully guaranteed in 2019.

Colt McCoy is married to Rachel Glandorf, former middle-distance track and field athlete for Baylor University. The duo met in Austin, Texas in the summer of 2008 while Rachel was working as an intern for Keye TV. She had interviewed the football star on different occasions before McCoy decided to ask her out on a date.

Their relationship blossomed and on January 12, 2010, just after his team lost the 2010 BCS National Championship game, McCoy got engaged to Rachel. It was an emotional moment when McCoy brought his girlfriend out onto the field, on the video scoreboard at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin and showed her the jumbotron which displayed the question; “Rachel, I love you! Will you marry me? Colt.” Rachel who was pleasantly surprised and completely love-struck said “yes”.

About six months after, on July 17, 2010, the couple tied the knot in an extravagant ceremony which featured musical performances from singers like Aaron Watson and Jordan Shipley. Their union has been blessed with two beautiful daughters – Sloane and Brooke; and one son.

The NFL player has two younger brothers named Case McCoy and Chance McCoy. Having an elder brother who was into sports probably rubbed off on Colt’s brothers as the two of them played college football. While Chance studied at Abilene Christian University where he played as a wide receiver, Case just like his elder brother played as a quarterback for the University of Texas Longhorns football team but left football upon graduation. He currently resides in Austin where he now works as a tenant broker specialist with HPI Corporate Services.
