iPhone 14 Pro Faced 'Unprecedented' Setback Leading to Removal of New Graphics Processor

Friday December 23, 2022 6:32 am PST by Hartley Charlton

Apple planned a major generational update for the iPhone 14 Pro's graphics capabilities, but was forced to scrap plans for the new GPU late in development after "unprecedented" missteps were discovered, according to The Information.

Youtube how to use iphone calendar
Youtube how to use iphone calendar

In a paywalled report, The Information claimed that Apple engineers were "too ambitious" in adding new features to the graphics processor designed for the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌, including features like ray tracing – a lighting technique to achieve a further level of realism in games. This meant that ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ prototype were found to draw much more power than expected, impacting the device's battery life and thermal management.

According to several individuals that claim to possess first-hand knowledge of the incident speaking to The Information, Apple discovered the flaw in the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌'s GPU late in the device's development cycle, meaning that it had to hastily pivot to revert largely to the GPU from the A15 Bionic chip from the previous year's iPhone 13 lineup.

The incident is reportedly unprecedented in Apple's chip design history and is responsible for why the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ shows only small improvements in graphics performance compared to the leaps made by previous iPhone generations. The error resulted in Apple restructuring its graphics processor team and moving some managers away from the project, including the exit of key figures that apparently contributed to Apple's emergence as a chip design leader.

The report goes on to reveal how Apple's chip design team has been forced to contend with a loss of talent in recent years, with the company having lost dozens of key people to various silicon design companies since 2019, as well as interpersonal feuds and lawsuits with chip startups.

Tesla Launches $300 AirPower-Like Wireless Charger That Can Power Three Qi Devices at Once

Thursday December 22, 2022 4:23 pm PST by Juli Clover

Tesla today announced the launch of the Tesla Wireless Charging Platform, a $300 wireless charger that is able to charge up to three Qi devices at one time.

Youtube how to use iphone calendar
Youtube how to use iphone calendar

The concept is somewhat similar to the AirPower that Apple wanted to produce as the three devices can be placed anywhere on the Tesla charging mat, receiving up to 15W of power each.

Tesla says that the angular design of the charging mat was inspired by the look of the Cybertruck, and it features an aluminum housing with an alcantara surface and detachable magnetic stand that can be used for charging flat or at an angle.

Inspired by the angular design and metallic styling of Cybertruck, our Wireless Charging Platform provides 15W of fast charging power per device for up to three devices simultaneously. Its sleek design is composed of an aluminum housing, premium alcantara surface and a detachable magnetic stand that allows you to lay the charger flat or at an angle for better viewing. Featuring FreePower(R) technology, which charges your Qi capable devices such as phones or earbuds placed anywhere on its surface without precise alignment.

Apple in September 2017 announced the AirPower, a multi-device charger designed to charge the iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods all at once. Apple wanted users to be able to place their devices anywhere on the ‌AirPower‌ to charge, but the overlapping wireless coils required were problematic, with Apple seeing heat management and interference issues that prevented the product from being viable. While the ‌AirPower‌ was meant to launch in 2018, it never appeared, and Apple confirmed its cancelation in 2019.

Tesla's charging mat is using FreePower, a technology from Aira that has been used in other wireless charging platforms like the Base Station Pro from Nomad. Nomad's Base Station Pro also supported charging from anywhere on the charging platform, but it turned out to be problematic because it did not work well with the iPhone 12 and later because of a firmware issue.

While Tesla's concept is similar to what Apple hoped to achieve with the ‌AirPower‌, it is limited to Qi-based devices like the ‌iPhone‌ and the AirPods and it does not charge the Apple Watch.

Apple Outlines What to Do If You Have Issues Accessing a Home in iOS 16.2

Thursday December 22, 2022 3:36 pm PST by Juli Clover

Apple today published a support document designed to help those who are having issues with HomeKit, outlining what to do if you can't access a home or accept an invitation in the Home app.

Youtube how to use iphone calendar
Youtube how to use iphone calendar

Apple says that on an iPhone or iPad running iOS 16.2 or iPadOS 16.2, users should use the Remove Home option on any listed homes that don't have accessories. If the invited user has a home with accessories, Apple support must instead be contacted for help.

If there is a home with no accessories listed, after it is removed from the Home app, the invited user and home owner's devices need to be restarted, as do all Apple TV and HomePod devices in the home.

From there, the home owner will need to remove any pending invitations to the invited user, and then re-invite the user to share control of the home. An invited user must accept an invitation to access a home within three hours or the invitation will expire.

For those who got screwed over by the now pulled new HomeKit architecture, Apple has just published this document https://t.co/50g8fdHwPE — Aaron (@aaronp613) December 22, 2022

Apple's instructions come just a day after the new Home architecture that was introduced in iOS 16.2 was pulled. At the current time, Apple is not allowing users to upgrade to the architecture, likely due to multiple bugs that users have reported with the update.

Issues with the architecture update include ‌‌HomeKit‌‌ devices stuck in an "updating" or "configuring" status, devices going missing, HomeKit Secure Video not working, and invitations to share the Home with other users failing, which is what the support document addresses.

In a separate support document, Apple says that the new Home architecture will be reintroduced at a later date, and that it has been temporarily removed.

Hands-On With Belkin's New iPhone Continuity Camera Mount for Mac Desktops and Displays

Thursday December 22, 2022 1:32 pm PST by Juli Clover

Belkin last week quietly introduced a new iPhone Mount with MagSafe that's designed for Mac desktops and displays that you use with your Mac, allowing you to take advantage of Continuity Camera on those devices. We picked one up and thought we'd test it out for MacRumors readers who are thinking about ordering one.

play

Subscribe to the MacRumors YouTube channel for more videos.

The Belkin ‌iPhone‌ Mount for Mac desktops and displays is pretty similar to the mount for Mac notebooks that came out earlier this year, but there are some design and price differences. First off, it's $40 instead of $30, probably because the mounting portion is a good deal larger to accommodate displays of different sizes.

Design wise, the lip of the mount fits over the edge of a display or an iMac, and then there's an adjustable arm that secures it at the back of the device. An ‌iPhone‌ attaches to the mount using ‌MagSafe‌, and can be put in portrait or landscape mode. There are also adjustable viewing angles that you can use by tilting the mount hinge, something not available on the MacBook version.

Because of the tilt option and the general height of an ‌iMac‌ or an external display, the desktop mount is much better at Desk View, the feature that lets you show off your desktop while on a video chat. With the MacBook version, Desk View is much more limited, but you can see a lot more of the desk with the desktop mount, which makes it more useful.

Belkin's display and Mac desktop mount is particularly useful for Mac Studio or Mac mini owners who use it with a Studio Display or a third-party display that doesn't have a webcam, because it adds webcam functionality. There's also a 1/4" tripod screw on the mount, so you can use it with a mini tripod too, if desired, adding even more versatility.

The Belkin ‌iPhone‌ Mount with ‌MagSafe‌ for desktops and displays can be purchased from the online Apple Store for $40. It is backordered and will arrive to customers in late January to early February.

YouTube Secures Deal for NFL Sunday Ticket After Apple Drops Out of Negotiations

Thursday December 22, 2022 6:55 am PST by Sami Fathi

YouTube has won the rights to the NFL Sunday Ticket after negotiations and a deal between the NFL and Apple failed to fully materialize, Google and the NFL announced today.

Youtube how to use iphone calendar
Youtube how to use iphone calendar

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, YouTube will pay roughly $2 billion a year to secure the rights to the NFL Sunday Ticket franchise as part of its YouTube TV service. NFL Sunday Ticket is a package that allows users to access and watch all Sunday games from out-of-market teams for games that may not be broadcasted on local channels or affiliates.

NFL Sunday Ticket will be offered as an add-on for YouTube TV, which currently costs $64.99 per month. The exact price of the add-on remains unknown. Neal Mohan, chief product officer at YouTube, speaking of the new deal, said "we'll be able to showcase these NFL games in a way that I think no other platform can."

Apple was originally seen as the top contender for securing the rights to NFL Sunday Ticket, with reports at one point suggesting Apple and the NFL had reached a final agreement. According to a new report this week by The Athletic, the agreement didn't go through due to apparent concerns at Cupertino that it wouldn't be able to incorporate NFL Sunday Ticket into its future AR/VR platforms.

Apple and the NFL also could not agree on whether the company would get the right to distribute Sunday Ticket on as yet non-existent platforms. Apple is heavily investing in virtual reality and augmented reality, nascent platforms in which sports are so far largely not viewed. As a result, Apple wanted what is dubbed known and unknown rights, individuals familiar with the NFL and Apple said. In other words, there is no known virtual reality market for Sunday Ticket, but there might be one day.

While YouTube will offer NFL Sunday Ticket as an add-on for YouTube, Apple reportedly wanted to offer NFL Sunday Ticket to Apple TV+ subscribers at no additional cost.

Thursday December 22, 2022 2:21 am PST by Sami Fathi

On one thread on Reddit, dozens of ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ users are reporting that one or more green and yellow lines may flash across the screen before disappearing a few seconds later when the device is being turned on. According to those same users, Apple Support has informed them the issue is not a result of a hardware defect but is a bug in iOS 16.

According to users on Reddit, the Apple Support forums (1,2,3), and the MacRumors forum, the issue seems to have started following the iOS 16.2 update, although some users report the problem even occurring on older versions of ‌iOS 16‌. One user on Reddit claims an Apple engineer informed them over the phone that Apple is working on a software patch for the issue, but the exact details are unknown.

Apple is currently testing iOS 16.3 with developers and public beta testers, but the update isn't expected to launch until early next year. The latest version of ‌iOS 16‌ is iOS 16.2, which included several new features, including Apple Music Sing, Apple's new Freeform app, and more.

Apple Pulls iOS 16.2 Option to Upgrade to New Home Architecture

Wednesday December 21, 2022 8:26 pm PST by Eric Slivka

One of the key new features in iOS 16.2 and macOS Ventura 13.1 is the ability to upgrade to a new Home app architecture. While Apple hasn't shared details on exactly what the changes are, the company says the upgrade offers "improved performance and reliability" for HomeKit accessories.

Youtube how to use iphone calendar
Youtube how to use iphone calendar

Upgrading the Home architecture requires that all devices accessing the home be updated to the latest operating system version, so many users have yet to take the leap, but users who have upgraded have reported some issues. Amidst those reports, it now appears Apple has removed the option for users to upgrade their Home app architecture.

Issues reported by users include ‌HomeKit‌ devices stuck in an "updating" or "configuring" status, devices going missing entirely, invitations to share the Home with other users failing, HomeKit Secure Video recording not working, and more.

Upgrading to the new Home app architecture is a user-initiated process in the Software Update section of Home Settings in the Home app, and as of a few hours ago, the option to upgrade no longer appears in the app. As a result, users who have yet to move to the new architecture will be unable to do so until Apple reenables the option. Users who have already upgraded will remain on the new architecture and can not revert to the previous one.

Update: Apple has confirmed in a support document that the new Home architecture update has been temporarily removed, and that the option to upgrade "will return soon."

Netflix to Begin Cracking Down on Password Sharing in Early 2023

Wednesday December 21, 2022 2:14 pm PST by Juli Clover

Popular streaming service Netflix is planning to put an end to password sharing starting in early 2023, according to a new report from The Wall Street Journal. There have been persistent rumors about the end of password sharing, and Netflix has been exploring methods to crack down on it, but the changes are set to officially go into effect next year.

Youtube how to use iphone calendar
Youtube how to use iphone calendar

Netflix has long known that password sharing is a problem affecting its profits, but the uptick in subscriptions in 2020 allowed the company to avoid addressing it. With revenue falling this year and Netflix's first subscriber loss in 10 years, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings decided it was time to act on the issue, which had been put off for too long.

Starting in 2023, Netflix plans to ask people who share accounts with others outside of their household to pay to do so. Netflix has been testing add-on payments for password sharing in some Latin American countries, charging around $3 extra. In these countries, the primary account owner must provide a verification code to anyone outside the household who wants to access the account, with Netflix repeatedly asking for the code until a monthly fee is paid to add non-household subscribers.

A similar tactic could be used in the United States, with Netflix possibly charging just below the cost of its $6.99 ad-supported plan for non-household subscribers who share someone's plan. Netflix wants those who have a shared password to sign up for their own subscription.

Netflix will enforce password sharing rules through IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity. To keep from alienating customers, Netflix may slowly phase out password sharing rather than putting a stop to it all at once. One method Netflix reportedly considered was adding pay-per-view content that could make users not want to share their passwords with people who might rent content, but Netflix ultimately decided against it.

The Netflix terms of service have never allowed for multi-household sharing, but Netflix has looked the other way for so long that implementing fees for offering account access to friends and family could upset some of its subscribers. An estimated 222 million paying households share passwords with an additional 100 million households that Netflix wants to monetize.

Pricing on Netflix plans includes watching on multiple supported devices in addition to affecting streaming quality, but Netflix does not want multiple viewers watching outside of the same household. Netflix's premium plan, for example, allows for Ultra HD 4K streaming and support for watching on four supported devices like iPhones, iPads, and Macs at one time, as long as those devices are owned by people in the same household.

In addition to boosting revenue by eliminating password sharing, Netflix has also introduced a more affordable ad-supported tier that is priced at $6.99 per month in the United States.

Apple Still Sells Refurbished Apple Watch Series 3 Models, But You Shouldn't Buy One

Wednesday December 21, 2022 7:56 am PST by Sami Fathi

The Apple Watch Series 3 was originally announced in 2017 and remained in Apple's lineup until earlier this year as a low-cost option. The Series 3's longevity in the lineup sparked jokes and memes, and despite being discontinued earlier this year, the Series 3 remains as a possible holiday shopping option for customers, but you shouldn't buy one.

Youtube how to use iphone calendar
Youtube how to use iphone calendar

In Apple's refurbished store, the company still sells the Apple Watch Series 3 with stainless steel cases for $369, $230 cheaper than the original price. The Apple Watch Series 3, in 2022 and onwards, is not a wise buy. The Series 3 no longer receives software updates and has an outdated design, health features, performance, and poor battery life.

At $369, the refurbished Series 3 is more expensive than the recently updated Apple Watch SE, which starts at $249 and has considerably better and more advanced features.

In its refurbished store, the company does sell some more sensible Apple Watch models, including select configurations of the Apple Watch Series 5 and Apple Watch Series 7. With Christmas just around the corner, refurbished products make for a good last-minute gift if customers are unable to order a brand-new gadget in time or want to save a bit of cash.

Latest Rumors for Every Mac: When to Expect New Models, What to Expect, and More

Wednesday December 21, 2022 6:29 am PST by Sami Fathi

From the MacBook Pro to the Mac Pro, Mac mini, iMac, Mac Studio, and MacBook Air, it can sometimes be exhausting to keep up with each product's latest rumors and leaks for what's coming next.

To help MacRumors readers get a quick digest of everything they need to know, we've consolidated the latest rumors about each Mac product below, including when new models are expected, new features, and more. For more information on each product, check out our dedicated guides.

MacBook Pro

Youtube how to use iphone calendar
Youtube how to use iphone calendar

The latest 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros were announced in October 2021, making them over a year old. The redesigned MacBook Pros were the first high-end Macs from Apple with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. Apple was widely expected to announce updated models this past fall but delayed plans to launch in 2023.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M2 Pro and M2 Max chip options are on track to launch in the early half of 2023. Last year, Apple held an April event to announce the M1 iMac, a new Apple TV, AirTags, and iPad Pros. With an early half of 2023 expectation, Apple could hold another spring event to announce the new MacBook Pros and other new products.

The new MacBook Pros are not expected to feature significant changes, sticking to the design introduced last year. Instead, they'll benefit from the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, which will offer higher performance and battery efficiency compared to the current M1 Pro and M1 Max variants.

iMac

Youtube how to use iphone calendar
Youtube how to use iphone calendar

The current iMac was announced in April 2021 with the M1 chip. Thanks to the efficiency of the M1 chip, Apple was able to completely redesign the iMac into a thinner form factor. The current iMac features a thin design with a 24-inch display and comes in various colors with matching accessories.

The 24-inch iMac is the only iMac in Apple's lineup, as the company discontinued the 27-inch and 21.5-inch models. For the next iMac, we aren't expecting any major changes. According to Gurman, a follow-up to the existing 24-inch iMac is in the works but is unlikely to ship until later in 2023 with the M3 chip, which Apple has not yet announced.

The updated iMac is unlikely to feature any major design changes but will benefit from the M3 chip. There are also reports that Apple is working on a higher-end version of the iMac dubbed the "iMac Pro," a name used for a discontinued iMac model. Gurman says Apple remains interested in the more high-end iMac option but that the product has faced delays internally.

Mac mini

Youtube how to use iphone calendar

The Mac mini is Apple's smallest and most portable Mac, a popular option for customers who enjoy its portability and versatility. The latest Mac mini was one of the first Macs to gain the M1 chip in November 2020, and since then, Apple has not provided Mac mini lovers with a newer model. Countless rumors suggested Apple was working on a redesigned Mac mini, but those plans have since reportedly faded.

According to Gurman, Apple is testing Mac mini models with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips for a possible launch sometime in 2023. The updated models are unlikely to feature the rumored redesign and will instead keep the same design as the existing model. The aluminum unibody design of the current Mac mini has been used on every new ‌Mac mini‌ since 2010. Apple continues to sell an Intel-based Mac mini alongside a model with the M1 chip.

MacBook Air

Youtube how to use iphone calendar
Youtube how to use iphone calendar

The M2 MacBook Air is the latest Mac from Apple, announced just this past June. The new MacBook Air has a new design that ditches the wedge-shaped look of previous models for a thin, light form factor. The MacBook Air has a 13-inch display, is powered by the M2 chip, and comes in four distinct colors.

Given that the MacBook Air was announced recently, we aren't expecting a direct successor anytime soon. But we are expecting a new addition to the MacBook Air family in 2023. According to reliable display analyst Ross Young, Apple will announce a MacBook Air with a 15.5-inch display as soon as the spring of next year.

The new MacBook Air is expected to feature the same overall design as the existing 13-inch model, with flat edges, a large Force Touch trackpad, a keyboard with function keys, MagSafe charging port, and more. At 15.5 inches, the upcoming MacBook Air will sit between the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro and will be the largest ‌MacBook Air‌ to date.

  • What's Next for the MacBook Air

Mac Pro

Youtube how to use iphone calendar

The Mac Pro is the most powerful Mac from Apple. The current Mac Pro is over three years old, making it overdue for an upgrade. The ‌Mac Pro‌ is the only Mac in Apple’s lineup that has not yet transitioned to Apple silicon and is still entirely powered by Intel chips.

Apple has been testing an Apple silicon Mac Pro for some time, but the development of the product has reportedly faced some challenges. According to Gurman, Apple's original plan to offer the upcoming Mac Pro with M2 Ultra and M2 Extreme chips may not go to plan. According to the journalist, Apple has abandoned plans to offer the Mac Pro with the most powerful Apple silicon chip, the M2 Extreme. Instead, the Mac Pro will be offered with only the M2 Ultra chip and have different configurations and the ability for expandability.

An exact timeframe on when to expect the upcoming Mac Pro is not yet known, but it can presumably be expected sometime in 2023.

The Mac Studio was announced in March 2022 as the highest-end Mac desktop until the Apple silicon Mac Pro arrives. The Mac Studio features a similar concept as the Mac mini, but in a larger form factor with more ports and performance. The current Mac Studio is offered with M1 Max and M1 Ultra chip options. For an update to the Mac Studio, we haven't heard much regarding any significant changes but could see an update with the M2 Max and M2 Ultra chips.

Recently unearthed Geekbench scores and database spottings have revealed Apple is testing the M2 Max chip internally, with what could be an upcoming Mac Studio. If Apple is sticking to an annual update schedule, we'll see a Mac Studio refresh this spring, but that remains to be seen.

According to the report, Samsung has prioritized the development of a particular display type that uses two-stack tandem OLED panels, which is what Apple plans to use in future ‌iPad‌ and Mac models. Prioritization of this display type means the South Korean tech giant will focus less on developing full-cut OLED displays, which use just a single OLED layer, according to The Elec.

Samsung is Apple's main display supplier and has been supplying the company with OLED displays for high-end iPhone models since 2017. Other products, like the iPhone SE, Mac, and ‌iPad‌, still use LCD displays and mini-LED technology on select products.

Apple is expected to release the first OLED iPad Pro in 2024 in 11-inch and 12.9-inch sizes, according to the reliable display analyst Ross Young. Also in 2024, Apple is also rumored to bring OLED display technology to the Mac with a 13-inch MacBook Air.

Apple is currently developing an in-house 5G modem that aims to replace Qualcomm's Snapdragon 5G chips within the coming years. The report today says that TSMC will be the main supplier of the Qualcomm 5G chip for use in the ‌iPhone 15‌ series, using the 5nm and 4nm process.

The iPhone 14 series includes the Snapdragon X65 modem, which helps improve 5G speeds and battery life. The ‌iPhone 15‌ is rumored to include the more advanced X70 chip, which features artificial intelligence capabilities for faster average speeds, improved coverage, better signal quality, lower latency, and up to 60% improved power efficiency.

Reports initially suggested Apple would make its switch to in-house 5G modems as soon as 2023, but follow-up reports suggested Apple had "failed" on the chip's development and will continue to use Qualcomm modems for the foreseeable future.
