  • Most everyone around here is aware of the trick on removing fumes from a gas tank - using exhaust from another vehicle to neutralize the fumes - but does the same trick work on diesel fuel tanks? Is it even neccessary? I know diesel is not explosive like gasoline, but I'd still hate to hear that fateful "boom" inside my oven

Have a customer wanting both his aluminum tanks on his semi rig done in, wait for it........gloss black.......and I sure as hell don't want to buying one of those things if it shreds itself (and most likely my oven and half the shop)

Customer says he'll have the insides steam cleaned, but all I can invision is someone being able to do just so much sticking a wand thru the filler neck opening. Unless those things have some sort of very large, removable inspection plate or something??? I told him to bring the truck by before we go any further with this. Waiting.........waiting.........wai............... .........

  • Re: Cleaning fuel tanks....... Yeah, I've been reading thru those. The hotrodders.com forum warns pretty strongly against even the exhaust gas trick, and I've heard of doing that all of my life. My old man used to fill them with water before doing any welding, but I'm not going to be welding or cutting or anything nearly that hot. Seems like a LOT more research is in my future before I'd even consider risking my life or the shop for a few hundred bucks.

The more I think about it, the less I like the idea of doing them at all. Yeah, it'd be cool to have that kind of work out there, and who knows where it might lead? But it wouldn't be so cool if I was observing it from 6 feet under

I have done car tanks before. Maybe I should re-think that idea.......... the first one was for myself, and I later did a few more for customers. I de-greased them inside and out, cleaned with metal wash from EW and the out gassed. Started at 250 for 10 min then 400 for 20 more... sand blasted IP'ed them ,then coated. I was really happy the way they turned out. Maybe I was just living right at that time..........

  • Re: Cleaning fuel tanks....... We do semi stanks for the local Peterbuilt dealership. I just have them drain the tanks, and hose them out befor they drop them off. making sure ALL plugs, blockages, etc are removed (think flame thrower, or bomb) I stick a lit torch inside to kill the fumes, and pre heat in the oven for about an hour befor coating. after doing the first tank, and having problems, I learned these tricks, and have had luck with them.

I also empty tanks, torch the inside befor welding too... remember flame thrower

Well, I'm not sure what size my guy has. It was just a phone call from a local trucker I passed on the Interstate Friday night. I haven't seen them yet. They could be 200 gallon tanks for all I know. But yeah, most of them are aluminum.
