To manage a client computer, you must enable remote management for it. You can do so by going to each computer and using System Preferences. For each client computer, you can also set preferences that restrict remote access to specific users or actions, or change other settings such as showing remote management status in the menu bar or requiring a password to control the screen. Enabling remote management doesn’t give you access to the computer, but it does let you define who has access. After enabling remote management, define Remote Desktop administrators for the computer. For information, see Set access privileges. Note: For increased security in macOS 10.14 or later, Screen Sharing gives you view-only access when you use the kickstart command-line tool to enable Remote Management on a Mac. If you want to both view and control the remote Mac with Screen Sharing, open System Preferences on the target Mac, click Sharing, then select the Remote Management checkbox. If Remote Management is already selected, deselect it and select it again. In macOS 12.1 or later, Screen Sharing can’t be enabled by the kickstart command-line tool. In these days most people are working from home and offering remote assistance to the end-users might be challenging under certain circumstances, even on Windows 10 devices. There is a workaround for this via a Microsoft Intune Configuration Profile setting: Route elevation prompts to user`s interactive desktop. By enabling this setting on the Windows 10 devices, during a remote assistance session, the UAC prompt is shown to the remote assistant, which allows the remote assistant to enter his credentials. Start Quick Assist (by searching for it via the search box or by hitting the Windows key + CTRL + Q) on both the Windows 10 desktops, from the end-user and the remote assistant. On the desktop of the assistant choose Assist another person. The end-user needs to enter the received security code and click Share screen. The assistant checks Take full control and clicks Continue. The end-user reviews the information, about who is connecting and click Allow. The remote assistance session is setup! But when we, for example, try to start PowerShell as Administrator, by default the assistant screen is paused/ turns black for the assistant. But when the setting is applied to route the elevation prompt, the User Account Control pop-up is shown to both users. This allows the assistant to provide his (administrator) credentials and run PowerShell as admin. And we are able to run PowerShell with Administrator rights. That`s it for this post. In short, remote desktop aims to increase efficiency whereas remote assistance facilitates technical support. Remote Assistance vs. Remote Desktop: Setting Up the ConnectionIn considering the difference between remote desktop and remote assistance, the means of connection is an important factor. Because each mode has a different function, the connections between each mode vary. One commonality is that the host computer must set up the connection. Typically, the host computer needs to give permission to accept a remote connection.
