Why is my vape popping

Why is my vape popping

Spitting or crackling noises are common when vaping. As a new vaper these noises can be concerning, however it isn’t something to worry about. It is important to understand what sounds are normal when using an e-cig and differentiate them from the noises that could be bad. Here are the causes of vape crackling plus some helpful ways of reducing this.

Why Does My Vape Crackle?

To understand why your vape crackles you need to know the process your e-cigarette goes through when vaping. When inhaling on your device, vape juice is drawn into the coil. It is then the coils job to heat up the e-liquid and turn it into vapour. Like with most liquid when it is heated rapidly it will make a crackling noise as it turns into vapour.

Your Vape Coil

The coil in use can impact the noise from the e-cig. Coils can be made with different materials and have surface areas. For example, mesh coils are designed to heat up more e-liquid at a faster rate, which then results in it making a louder crackling noise when activated. A newer coil will also have a more noticeable sound, but after a couple of days of use it will settle down.

Your E-Liquids

The type of e-liquid will also affect the noise level when vaping. The level of VG and PG in vape juice determines how thick it is. A 50/50 or high PG e-liquid that is thinner will have a noticeable sound. Whereas a thicker vape juice with more VG will not be as loud but will still make a crackling noise.

Your Vape’s Power Output

As the crackling noise a vape kit makes is caused by the e-liquid being heated, naturally the higher the power the louder it will be. Low powered MTL devices will make little noise whereas a powerful mod kit will be louder.

If the noise your vape kit is making sounds more like a gurgling then the output power is too low. Trying to vape with the power too low is what causes excess e-liquid to build up in the coil head, resulting in it spitting hot vape juice. To clear the coil try turning the power up or flicking the device downward to remove the built-up liquid.

Is It Bad If Your Vape Crackles?

No, it is not bad if your vape crackles. The noise should indicate that your kit is working and producing vapour. Once you become used to the noise your e-cig makes you can then identify when it is making an unusual sound. This could then be a sign of the wrong e-liquid being used, the wrong output power or the wrong type of coil resistance.

How to Stop Vape Crackling and Spitting

As previously mentioned, one of the methods of clearing your coil to stop it from spitting is flicking the device. This will remove any vape juice that has built up in the centre of the coil.

Shorter draws will produce less noise as the e-cig will not be vapourising as much e-liquid.

Vaping at a lower wattage will decrease the noise. However, make sure the coil in use can perform at that wattage.

We get lots of troubleshooting questions from vapers, and a common one from beginners is that their vape is making a popping sound. Many people are worried this means their vape pen is somehow broken or malfunctioning. I can understand why that would be a worry!

But you can relax, because most of the time, this sound is nothing to worry about. However, by paying attention to the tics and changes in your vape, you can catch issues before they become a big deal. So here are some reasons why your e-cigarette is making popping or crackling noises, and what to do about them.

A totally normal POP!

As the e-juice is being heated by the coil and turns into vapor, it makes a quiet crackling noise. The type of device you use will depend on how loud this noise will seem to you, and people who take deep, intense puffs may also notice the noise is louder.

Wattage and voltage and noise

A sub-ohm e-cigarette will usually crackle more than a standard setup because it increases the amount of e-liquid that will condensate – the more liquid, the louder the noise. You can adjust the airflow on a sub-ohm tank to reduce the amount of e-liquid – give this a go and see if it makes a difference.

If you’re using a low wattage, you’re making it harder for the e-cig to vaporize the e-liquid. As well as getting the noise, you risk flooding your atomiser and ending up with e-juice in your mouth. Try increasing the wattage and you should find the noise gets a bit quieter.

Choose different e-liquids

The thinner your e-liquid, the more likely you are to end up with a flooded coil and the popping and spitting in your atomiser. This is much more likely to happen with high-PG juices. The higher quality your e-juices (try the NZVAPOR range made from American ingredients in an accredited laboratory), the less likely you are to end up with this issue.

Check your coil

Some coils are twisted or braided, which produces a bigger surface area to get more vapor. This can also cause louder popping sounds as the e-liquid gets into all the little spaces in the braid. This isn’t exactly preventable, but it’s something to look out for when considering a new e-cigarette device.

Some people also get the popping sound if their device has a narrow drip, as condensed vapor can get stuck inside and block the fow. Another feature to look out for is a wider drip/chimney.

The best thing to do is to learn to appreciate the cracks and pops as part of the vaping experience. A mate of mine says it’s like “sitting next to a cosy crackling fireplace.” But if it’s really annoying you, then try a few of these tricks and see if you notice a difference.

At NZVAPOR we stock a range of e-cigs and e-juices for you to choose from, so you can experiment and find the perfect mix and flavour for you.

When you turn on your vape, the occasional popping sound is to be expected. For example, you may notice a soft crackling as your vape heats up. This is perfectly normal and is usually attributed to the e-liquid, which is changing into a vapor. You know how boiling water crackles? It’s a similar scenario.

However, popping may indicate a problem with your device. If the sound is intense or you experience spit back (when hot e-juice ends up in the mouthpiece), you should investigate.

Coil Design

If you’ve got a popping vape, your coil may be the culprit. Coils come in a variety of sizes and shapes, some of which are more prone to trapping vape juice than others. For example, twisted and braided coils usually have crevices in which e-juice can gather and “cook.” When it heats up, these pockets may produce a popping sound.

When coil design is to blame, it’s a relatively easy fix. You can manually tighten the coils to reduce the number of crevices, or you can install smoother coils to eliminate the issue.

E-Liquid Choice

Is the intensity of the popping inconsistent? If you find your device pops during some uses and not during others, it may not be an issue with the vape. Instead, it may have something to do with the e-liquid you’re using.

Some e-juices are more prone to noise due to their ingredients. E-juice that contains sugar is usually noisier because it contains cellulose, which can generate a popping sound as it breaks down during vaporization.

Vape juice with higher PG concentration may also be more likely to pop; since it’s thinner than VG-heavy e-juice, it’s more likely to flood the coil.

Voltage/Wattage Level

One thing you should check when troubleshooting vape device is the voltage/wattage level. When your wattage is insufficient, the proper temperature for vaporization can’t be reached. Instead of vapor, you get a lot of hot e-juice, which is when popping and spitting become a problem.

If you sub-ohm vape, you may need to rework your setup with a higher wattage. If you use an above-ohm device, there may be something wrong with your battery or your vape may need a part replaced.

Replaced RTA Parts

Many vapers enjoy customizing their devices to achieve the perfect experience. If you’ve built your vape from scratch or if you’ve replaced any parts, you may have more intense sounds. This stems from how the pieces fit together, as e-juice can get into spaces between the coils and tank if pieces aren’t flush. You should also ensure you’re not over-priming your wick, as this can lead to e-liquid getting into places it shouldn’t.

Condensing Vapor

The problem may not be in coils at all. If you have a narrow drip tip, vapor can condense along the inside, leading to warm a coat of vape juice that may pop as you inhale. This is also a common cause of spit back, as you may inhale this condensed e-liquid. Fortunately, you can solve this issue by installing a wider drip tip.

Vaping Technique

Popping isn’t always caused by a device issue; how you vape can intensify the sounds. If you’ve checked for the above causes and haven’t found any problems, you may need to alter your vaping technique.

As it turns out, long, deep inhales can exacerbate noises. You can test if this is the source of your troubles by trying shorter hits and comparing the sound to your usual vaping technique.
