Reports: Remembering 9-11: Todd Beamer, the Wheaton College grad on Flight 93 who said ‘Let’s roll’

Let us remember the roles of two persons from the Chicago area — Todd Beamer and Lisa Jefferson — and how their lives intertwined on that horrible day on this 20th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks.

We all remember the day on September 11, 2001, when terrorists hijacked four planes and converted them into missiles.

Each of the two World Trade Center towers was struck by a plane. The Pentagon was hit by a third plane. The fourth plane, on which Beamer was flying, crashed into a field outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Beamer grew up in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. Jefferson grew up on Chicago’s South Side.

On United Airlines Flight 93, Beamer was a passenger. His stolen plane was believed to be on its way to Washington, with the White House and Capitol, both national symbols, as potential targets.

Beamer is best known for the inspiring words “Let’s roll,” which he yelled before rushing the terrorists and disrupting their assault plans after the plane crashed in rural Pennsylvania.

Beamer phoned 0 on an Airfone attached to the back of a seat’s headrest and was connected to Jefferson, a supervisor at the Verizon Airfone Call Center in west suburban Oak Brook at the time. Because of that call, the world now knows how the passengers dealt with the attackers on Flight 93.

On September 11, Beamer, 32, was a resident of Canbury, New Jersey. He was an Oracle Corporation account manager, the father of two sons, and the father of a third child, a daughter, on the way.

When the hijackers took control of his jet, he was on his way to San Francisco for a business meeting.

Beamer, a native of the western suburbs, went to Wheaton Christian Grammar School and graduated from Wheaton Christian High School in 1987. Wheaton Academy, in West Chicago, is now the name of the school.

He met his wife, Lisa, at Wheaton College, a Christian liberal arts college. They received their Wheaton diplomas in 1991. In 1993, Beamer graduated from DePaul University with a master’s degree in business administration.

Jefferson initially doubted Beamer because he was so quiet, she said. “Todd enjoyed his life, but he understood it was much more than his 32 years on this planet,” she explained. Because Jesus was his savior, his soul was safe even while his body wasn’t.”

Todd and Lisa Beamer’s children, David, Drew, and Morgan, who were born in the months following 9-11, all went on to Wheaton College.

“Called,” a book written by Jefferson and former WBBM anchor Felicia Middlebrooks about that day, was released by an arm of the Moody Bible Institute in 2006. Todd Beamer “sounded so peaceful,” Jefferson writes, “that I began to doubt the sincerity and urgency of the call.”

“I could hear the screams and sobs in the background as Todd Beamer described the events aboard the jet on that terrible day,” Jefferson said.

Lisa Beamer shared her husband’s last call tale to pupils, many of whom were not born in 2001. And how Beamer requested Jefferson to join him in praying the Lord’s Prayer and Psalm 23.

Then Beamer and the other passengers, all heroes, carried out their plan to stop the terrorists. “Let’s roll,” Beamer said.
