Quantity demanded is a term used in economics to describe the total amount of a good or service that consumers demand over a given interval of time. It depends on the price of a good or service in a marketplace, regardless of whether that market is in equilibrium.

The relationship between the quantity demanded and the price is known as the demand curve, or simply the demand. The degree to which the quantity demanded changes with respect to price is called the elasticity of demand.

The price of a good or service in a marketplace determines the quantity that consumers demand. Assuming that non-price factors are removed from the equation, a higher price results in a lower quantity demanded and a lower price results in higher quantity demanded. Thus, the price of a product and the quantity demanded for that product have an inverse relationship, as stated in the law of demand.

An inverse relationship means that higher prices result in lower quantity demand and lower prices result in higher quantity demand.

A change in quantity demanded refers to a change in the specific quantity of a product that buyers are willing and able to buy. This change in quantity demanded is caused by a change in the price.

An increase in quantity demanded is caused by a decrease in the price of the product (and vice versa). A demand curve illustrates the quantity demanded and any price offered on the market. A change in quantity demanded is represented as a movement along a demand curve. The proportion that quantity demanded changes relative to a change in price is known as the elasticity of demand and is related to the slope of the demand curve.

Say, for example, at the price of $5 per hot dog, consumers buy two hot dogs per day; the quantity demanded is two. If vendors decide to increase the price of a hot dog to $6, then consumers only purchase one hot dog per day. On a graph, the quantity demanded moves leftward from two to one when the price rises from $5 to $6. If, however, the price of a hot dog decreases to $4, then customers want to consume three hot dogs: the quantity demanded moves rightward from two to three when the price falls from $5 to $4. 

By graphing these combinations of price and quantity demanded, we can construct a demand curve connecting the three points.

Using a standard demand curve, each combination of price and quantity demanded is depicted as a point on the downward sloping line, with the price of hot dogs on the y-axis and the quantity of hot dogs on the x-axis. This means that as price decreases, the quantity demanded increases. Any change or movement to quantity demanded is involved as a movement of the point along the demand curve and not a shift in the demand curve itself. As long as consumers' preferences and other factors don't change, the demand curve effectively remains static.

Price changes change the quantity demanded; changes in consumer preferences change the demand curve. If, for example, environmentally conscious consumers switch from gas cars to electric cars, the demand curve for traditional cars would inherently shift.

The proportion to which the quantity demanded changes with respect to price is called elasticity of demand. A good or service that is highly elastic means the quantity demanded varies widely at different price points.

Conversely, a good or service that is inelastic is one with a quantity demanded that remains relatively static at varying price points. An example of an inelastic good is insulin. Regardless of price point, those who need insulin demand it at the same amount.

Quantity demanded is affected by the price of the product. If the price goes up, the demand will go down. If the price goes down, demand will go up. Price and demand are inversely related in this way.

Demand and quantity demanded both pertain to purchasing but in different ways. Demand is just how many of an item a consumer is willing to buy—the sheer quantity. Quantity demanded is how many things a consumer will purchase at a specific price. Quantity demanded is a more detailed metric. Graphed out, demand is the entirety of the demand curve, whereas quantity demanded is a single point.

Remember, elasticity measures the responsiveness of one variable to changes in another variable. In the last section we looked at price elasticity of demand, or how much a change in price affects the quantity demanded. In this section we will dig deeper by learning how to calculate elasticity using the midpoint method. We'll also introduce the idea of elasticity of supply. Supply can also be elastic, since a change in price will influence the quantity supplied.

Let's look at the practical example mentioned earlier about cigarettes. Certain groups of cigarette smokers, such as teenage, minority, low-income, and casual smokers, are somewhat sensitive to changes in price: for every 10 percent increase in the price of a pack of cigarettes, the smoking rates drop about 7 percent. Plugging those numbers into the formula, we get

Inelastic, Elastic, and Unitary Demand

So what does the number -0.7 tell us about the elasticity of demand? The negative sign reflects the law of demand: at a higher price, the quantity demanded for cigarettes declines. All price elasticities of demand have a negative sign, so it's easiest to think about elasticity in absolute value, ignoring the negative sign. The fact that the result is less than one is more important than the negative sign. It tells us that the size of the quantity change is less than the size of the price change (i.e. the numerator in the elasticity formula is less than the denominator). This tells us that it would take a relatively large price change in order to cause a relatively small change in quantity demanded. In other words, consumer responsiveness to a change in price is relatively small. Therefore, when the elasticity is less than 1, we say that demand is inelastic. The data above indicate that the demand for cigarettes by teenagers, minority, low income and casual smokers is relatively inelastic. Addicted adult smokers, though, are even less sensitive to changes in the price—most are willing to pay whatever it takes to support their smoking habit. We can say that their demand is even more inelastic than low income or casual smokers.

Different products have different price elasticities of demand. If the absolute value of the elasticity of some product is greater than one, it means that the change in the quantity demanded is greater than the change in price. This indicates a larger reaction to price change, which we describe as elastic. If the elasticity is equal to one, it means that the change in the quantity demanded is exactly equal to the change in price, so the demand response is exactly proportional to the change in price. We call this unitary elasticity, because unitary means one.

Before we dive deeper into solving for elasticity, let's first make sure we are comfortable calculating percentage changes, also known as a growth rates. The formula for computing a growth rate is straightforward:

Suppose that a job pays $10 per hour. At some point, the individual doing the job is given a $2-per-hour raise. The percentage change (or growth rate) in pay is

Now to solve for elasticity, we use the growth rate, or percentage change, of the quantity demanded as well as the percentage change in price in order to to examine how these two variables are related. The price elasticity of demand is the ratio between the percentage change in the quantity demanded (Qd) and the corresponding percent change in price:

There are two general methods for calculating elasticities: the point elasticity approach and the midpoint (or arc) elasticity approach. Elasticity looks at the percentage change in quantity demanded divided by the percentage change in price, but which quantity and which price should be the denominator in the percentage calculation? The point approach uses the initial price and initial quantity to measure percent change. This makes the math easier, but the more accurate approach is the midpoint approach, which uses the average price and average quantity over the price and quantity change. (These are the price and quantity halfway between the initial point and the final point.) Let’s compare the two approaches. Suppose the quantity demanded of a product was 100 at one point on the demand curve, and then it moved to 103 at another point. The growth rate, or percentage change in quantity demanded, would be the change in quantity demanded

divided by the average of the two quantities demanded:

In other words, the growth rate:

Note that if we used the point approach, the calculation would be:

(103–100)100=3% growth\frac{(103–100)}{100}=3\%\text{ growth}100(103–100)=3% growth

This produces nearly the same result as the slightly more complicated midpoint method (3% vs. 2.96%). If you need a rough approximation, use the point method. If you need accuracy, use the midpoint method. Note: as the two points become closer together, the point elasticity becomes a closer approximation to the arc elasticity.
