When something is in a it is not permanently closed in by the structure or finish of a building

Code Change Summary: Revised code definition.

In the 2020 NEC, the Article 100 definition of “accessible” has changed. In the past, electrical equipment was considered “accessible” if it allowed close approach and was not guarded by locked doors, elevation, or other means. Now, an electrical panel or other electrical equipment is considered “accessible” if it is simply “capable of being reached for operation, renewal, and inspection”. This code change removes some of the subjective terminology found in the previous definition.

Below are a few examples of NEC code sections where something is required to be “accessible”:

  • Overcurrent Protection. 240.30(B). The operating handle of a circuit breaker shall be permitted to be accessible without opening a door or cover.
  • Low-Voltage Suspended Ceiling Power Distribution Systems 393.21(A). A disconnecting means for the Class 2 supply to the power grid system shall be located so as to be accessible and within sight of the Class 2 power source for servicing or maintenance of the grid system.
  • 404.8(A) Exception 2. Switches and circuit breakers installed adjacent to motors, appliances, or other equipment that they supply shall be permitted to be located higher than 2.0 m (6 ft 7 in.) and to be accessible by portable means.
  • 410.130(G)(3). The disconnecting means shall be located so as to be accessible to qualified persons before servicing or maintaining the ballast.
  • HVAC Equipment. 440.14 Exception 2. Where an attachment plug and receptacle serve as the disconnecting means in accordance with 440.13, their location shall be accessible but shall not be required to be readily accessible.
  • Ballasts, Transformers, Electronic Power Supplies, and Class 2 Power Sources. 600.21(A). Ballasts, transformers, electronic power supplies, and Class 2 power sources shall be located where accessible and shall be securely fastened in place.
