All state offices, including the Department of Revenue, will close on Monday, September 5 for the Labor Day holiday.  We will resume normal business hours Tuesday, September 6.

There are two ways to receive an automatic 6-month extension to file your Georgia income tax return:

Get an extension to file your Federal return

You do not need to request an extension to file your Georgia return if you receive a Federal extension. The due date for filing your Georgia return will be automatically extended with an approved Federal extension. Attach a copy of Federal Form 4868 or the IRS confirmation letter (if you request a Federal extension electronically) to the Georgia return when filed. Contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 or visit their website at www.irs.gov to obtain Form 4868 and additional extension information.

or

Submit Georgia Form IT-303, if you don't need a Federal extension

You must mail Form IT-303 before the statutory return due date and attach a copy to the return when filed. We will notify you only if your extension request is denied.

An extension to file cannot exceed 6 months and does not extend the date for paying the tax.

Tax must be mailed, along with Form IT-560, by the statutory due date for filing the return to avoid late payment penalty and interest. The amount paid should be entered on Form 500, Page 2, Line 20.

Follow the instructions on Form PV to request an automatic extension on filing your return. Filing this form extends the time to file your return, but does not extend the time to pay your taxes. Payment of the expected tax due is required with Form PV by April 18, 2022*. You can file and pay by credit card or electronic funds withdrawal (direct debit) on our Web site. If no tax is due and you requested a federal extension, you do not need to file Form PV or take any other action to obtain an automatic six month extension. If no tax is due and you did not request a federal extension, file your Maryland state extension online or by phone at 410-260-7829. Only submit Form PV if there is tax due.

*Note: The Comptroller of Maryland has extended the statutory due date of April 15, 2022 for filing and paying 2021 Maryland state individual income taxes to July 15, 2022.

Combat Zone Extension

Maryland allows the same six-month extension for filing and paying personal income taxes for military and support personnel serving in a designated combat zone or qualified hazardous duty area and their spouses as allowed by the IRS. For more detailed information visit www.irs.gov. If you are affected by the extension, enter 912 in one of the code number boxes to the right of the telephone number area.

If necessary, you may request an extension of time of up to six months beyond the filing deadline to file your return. If you already requested an extension from IRS for your federal return and you do not owe additional state tax, you receive an automatic six-month extension for filing your Maryland return.

If no tax is due and you did not request a federal extension, you can request a six-month Maryland extension online or by calling 410-260-7829 from Central Maryland or toll-free 1-800-260-3664 from elsewhere.

If you do owe additional state tax and need an extension of time to file, you must ifile or file Form PV by the due date and enclose a check or money order for the amount you expect to owe. You can also pay by credit card. You can pay by direct debit if you file electronically. You should file Form PV only if you are making a payment with your extension request.

No request will be granted for an extension of more than six months, unless you are out of the United States, in which case you may request an extension of up to one year. If you are stationed in a combat zone, see Military and Support Personnel Serving in a Combat Zone.

Estate tax extension

You may request an extension of up to six months to file a Maryland estate tax return, or up to one year if the person required to file the return is out of the United States. For more information, see Filing Extension for Estate Tax

The following companies partner with the IRS Free File program, so that you can e-file your tax filing extension for free. Please be aware that filing an extension gives you time to e-file your federal tax return. If you have a balance due, the deadline to pay is still April 18, 2022. However, if you want to file your taxes now with free, easy to use software use IRS Free File.

What to do if you haven’t filed your tax return

Need more time to prepare your federal tax return? This page provides information on how to apply for an extension of time to file. Please be aware that:

  • An extension of time to file your return does not grant you any extension of time to pay your taxes.
  • You should estimate and pay any owed taxes by your regular deadline to help avoid possible penalties.
  • You must file your extension request no later than the regular due date of your return.

E-file Your Extension Form for Free

Individual tax filers, regardless of income, can use Free File to electronically request an automatic tax-filing extension.

  • Filing this form gives you until October 15 to file a return.

    • If October 15 falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the due date is delayed until the next business day. Your return is considered filed on time if the envelope is properly addressed, postmarked, and deposited in the mail by the due date.

  • To get the extension, you must estimate your tax liability on this form and should also pay any amount due.

Get an extension when you make a payment

You can also get an extension by paying all or part of your estimated income tax due and indicate that the payment is for an extension using Direct Pay, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), or a credit or debit card. This way you won’t have to file a separate extension form and you will receive a confirmation number for your records.

You can file an extension for your taxes by submitting Form 4868 with the IRS online or by mail. This must be done before the last day for filing taxes. Filing an extension for your taxes gives you additional months to prepare your return no matter the reason you need the extra time.

What is a tax extension?

When some taxpayers ask, “How do I get an extension for my taxes?” they might be thinking of the taxes owed and not the return itself.

This question calls attention to a key distinction about what a tax extension is — and what it is not. An extension only gives you more time to finish the paperwork, not more time to pay.

Your tax payment is due on the tax deadline, which typically falls on April 15 or on the next business day if it falls on a weekend or holiday.

  • If you know you’ll be getting a refund, you won’t need to worry about paying when you are filing an extension for taxes. The earlier you file your return, the earlier you’ll receive your refund.
  • If you think or know you’ll owe, you should estimate your tax liability and pay the amount due when you file Form 4868.

Is there a penalty for filing for a tax extension?

Filing a tax extension is not a bad thing. There is no penalty for filing an extension. However, not paying on time or enough, or failing to file altogether, may cost you.

  • If you don’t pay the full amount you owe, the IRS will charge you interest on the unpaid balance until you pay the full amount.
  • If you don’t pay at least 90% of the amount you owe, you might also be subject to a late payment penalty. The penalty is usually half of 1% of the amount owed for each month, up to a maximum of 25%.
  • If you don’t file either your return or Form 4868 by the tax filing deadline, you’ll be subject to a late filing penalty. The penalty is usually 5% of the amount you owe for each month, up to a maximum of 25%.

After you file the extension, you’ll have until October 15 to gather your documents and finish your filing.  When you complete your return, you should include the amount you’ve already paid in the payments section of your Form 1040.
