Best free antivirus for Windows 10 Reddit

Fist: Everyone should reinstall windows when they buy a new PC

Second: if you are not willing to pay, use Windows defender, it is not so bad.

Third: if you are going to pay: bitdefender or Kaspersky are for sure top-notch.

You have to know that when you install an antivirus, you hand over everything. It’s matter of trust, so don’t take it so lightly.

Best free antivirus for Windows 10 Reddit

Hey guys

I'm looking to download some sort of antivirus software for my computer. i have tried to look online but most websites seem to be paid advertisements for Norton and McAfee, so I don't know who to trust.

Please let me know if you have any recommended software, and how your experience has been with them.

Thanks

Use the one that comes with Windows.

Windows Defender is absolutely good enough. Just don’t download random shit.

Malwarebytes or eset online if you think you have a virus. Windows defender is all you should need if you're not a boomer.

What are boomers doing that needs something more?

+1 for a periodic scan with Malwarebytes. Just run the scan whenever you visited a shady website or downloaded some things you don't 100% trust

Sorry but with that logic you've already been compromised and a scan is too late. A scanner gets rid of viruses yeah, but it doesn't prevent them from happening in the first place.

Also there are viruses out there that aren't detected by any scanner, such as one of the Discord token stealing apps that bypassed virustotal's scan of the .exe. That's something like 65 vendors that didn't pick up that it was a virus.

As people say, Windows Defender is built into win10.

What you could (should, really) add manually are adblockers for Chrome (or whichever browser you use. The ones that have worked well for me are uBlock Origin together with Adblock Pro and Poper Blocker (blocks pop-ups etc). This is since the majority of viruses/trojans/keyloggers and malware comes from malicious webpages.

Windows Defender and common sense is more than enough. There are free antiviruses but most are basically spyware and/or nagware. Bitdefender is one of the worst in that regard.

Windows Defender is good enough for the most part nowadays, that may change but for now it's seemingly fine.

My old go-to was Avast mixed with Comodo Firewall. The downside of Comodo firewall is it's so thorough that it gets annoying, and you end up just allowing the virus through sometimes out of habit of selecting approve. In the end user error is more likely to be the cause of a virus than anything else, including visiting shady websites etc.

As a lot will say, cybersecutity is 70% common sense 30% anti-virus doing shit, no anti-virus will help if you aren't responsible

level 1

Windows AV is fine and use Malware bytes too.

level 1

As everyone said, Windows defender. Also set up an admin account that has all the admin rights, and remove your admin rights from your account

ive just used avg free since like 2005. seems to do alright. the file and behavior shields are a little overbearing sometimes tho

Windows defender + common sense
