Internal

Internal in computing terms is used to describe a device that is installed within the computer.

The main Foundation of the computer is based around the Motherboard.

The motherboard is the computer's main circuit board. It's a thin plate that holds the CPU, memory, connectors for the hard drive and optical drives and expansion cards to control the video, audio and connections to the computer's ports (such as USB ports). The motherboard connects directly or indirectly to every part of the computer.

A RAM slot is what allows computer memory (RAM) to be inserted into the computer. Depending on the motherboard, there may be 2 to 4 memory slots that determine the type of RAM used with the computer.

RAM (Random Access Memory)

RAM is the system's short-term memory. Whenever the computer performs calculations, it temporarily stores the data in the RAM until it is needed. This short-term memory disappears when the computer is turned off. RAM is measured in megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB). The more RAM available, the more things the computer can do at the same time. With not enough RAM, your computer may be slow when having several programs open.

Processor Socket

A processor socket is a connection that allows a computer processors to be connected to a motherboard.

Power Supply Unit

The power supply unit in a computer converts the power from the wall outlet to the type of power needed by the computer. It sends power through cables to the motherboard and other components.

Basic Input/Output System (BIOS)

Short for Basic Input/Output System, the BIOS (pronounced bye-oss) is a ROM chip located on all motherboards that allows you to access and set up your computer system at the most basic level.

ROM

Short for Read-Only Memory, ROM is a storage medium that is used with computers and other electronic devices. Data stored in ROM may only be read; it is either modified with extreme difficulty or not at all.

Expansion Slots

An expansion slot is an opening located inside a computer on the motherboard that allows additional boards to be connected.

Heat Sink & Fan

A heat sink is an electronic device that incorporates a fan to keep a hot component such as a processor cool. A Fan is a hardware device that keeps the overall computer or a computer device cool by circulating air to or from the computer or component. The picture is an example of a fan on a heat sink.

Hard Drive Controller

The hard disk controller is a circuit that enables a computer to read and write information to a hard drive. The HDC also acts as a bus, connecting the hard disk to the rest of the computer's components.

  External Ports

External port has either holes or a slot that matches the plug or card being connected into the port. External devices are connected to a computer using cables and ports. Ports are slots on the motherboard into which a cable of external device is plugged in. Examples of external devices attached via ports are a mouse, keyboard, monitor, microphone, speakers etc.

Specialist cards are cards that fit into expansion slots on a desktop computer and then give a computer additional capabilities. Below are some examples of specialist cards.

Sound Card

A sound card is an expansion card for producing sound on a computer that can be heard through speakers or headphones.

Graphics Card

A graphics card is a device installed in a computer that consists of a graphics processing unit designed to help process and display images, especially 3D graphics.

Network Card

A network card is an expansion card that enables a computer to connect to a network; such as a home network, or the Internet using an Ethernet cable.
