How to troubleshoot Nokia 8 with Facebook app that keeps crashing

Before you begin to troubleshoot software problems on your phone, make sure that your phone is has strong and stable Wi-Fi internet connection. Facebook app requires stable and fast Internet connection for it to work as intended. If you’re experiencing network connectivity issues like Wi-Fi Internet drops or no Internet at all, then you will need to deal with that first. Once your Internet is back up and running, the rest of your online apps including Facebook should be working fine again. Otherwise, try these subsequent workarounds.

First solution: Force close Facebook and background apps.

Apps will experience random errors and glitches at some point. Oftentimes, the problem is minor and therefore easily remedied by restarting the application. To clear the Facebook app from random errors, you can force it to close with these steps:

  1. Tap the Apps key next to the Home button on the bottom right of the phone.
  2. Tap the X on the Facebook app to close it.
  3. If you see several apps running in the background, press the Menu icon and then swipe up through all apps.
  4. Then, tap Clear All to confirm.

Alternatively, you can do these:

  1. Tap the Apps key (Square button) on the bottom right corner of your phone next to the Home button.
  2. Slide your finger right on the Facebook app to end it.
  3. To end all running apps, tap Clear All.

After closing Facebook and any other background apps, reboot your phone (soft reset) to clear and refresh the operating system and internal memory of the phone. You can do the usual reboot or force restart, if necessary. The latter is often required when the phone screen gets stuck or frozen from certain app malfunctions.

To do the usual reboot or soft reset on the Nokia 8, follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold the Power button for a few seconds and then release when the menu options appear.
  2. Select the Power off option then tap OK. Your phone then shuts down.
  3. After 30 seconds, press and hold the Power button again until your phone restarts.

To force restart your Nokia 8, follow these steps:

Press the Volume Up and Power buttons simultaneously for a few seconds and then release both buttons when the phone reboots.

Both these restarts won’t affect any data stored on the internal memory, so you won’t lose any of your personal information, downloaded apps and other files you saved on your device.

Second solution: Clear app cache and data.

Every app on your device stores temporary data in both the app and phone’s internal memory. These temporary files or data are referred to as cache. Cache files can help make apps and the device itself perform faster especially when loading the same data from within the app or phone system. However, cache files can also cause troubles when they get corrupted or crash. When this happens, certain apps or the device itself can become erratic. To make sure this isn’t what’s causing the Facebook app to crash or fail to load, try clearing cache and data on Facebook app. Here’s how:

  1. From the Home screen, drag the Arrow Up or slide your finger upwards from the bottom of the screen to launch the Apps screen.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Apps & notifications.
  4. Tap Info.
  5. Tap to select Facebook.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap Clear Cache to clear temporary files and data from the Facebook app.
  8. Press the Home button when the cache clearing is finished.

Then open Facebook app again and see if the problem is fixed.

Third solution: Install app updates, if available.

Installing available updates for your apps is recommended because updates also contain fix patches to address existing problems on the app that are inflicted by software bugs and malware. If you haven’t set your device to automatically install updates, then you need to manually check, download, and install updates for your apps and phone software. Here’s how:

  1. Go to the Home screen.
  2. Drag/slide the Arrow Up symbol to bring up the apps screen.
  3. Scroll down and tap Play Store.
  4. From the Google Play Store main screen, tap the list symbol on the leftmost side of the Search bar.
  5. Tap on My apps and games. A list of apps with pending updates will then show up along with an Update button next to them.
  6. Click the Update button next to Facebook to install pending update for Facebook app. Or you can also tap the Update All button to install all app updates, including Facebook simultaneously.
  7. Follow the onscreen instructions to finish the update download and installation.

Return to the Home when the apps are finished updating. To ensure all new software changes are properly implemented, restart/soft reset your Nokia 8.

To check for available software update, follow these steps:

  1. Slide up the bottom menu (UP arrow) from the Home screen.
  2. Scroll to and select Settings.
  3. Scroll to and select About phone.
  4. Tap System updates.
  5. Tap Check for update. Your device then starts to check for available software update.
  6. Wait until the search is finish.
  7. You will be prompted with a notification if a new software version is available for your device. Follow the steps to proceed with the update file download and installation process.

If your phone is up to date, it will say so with a message prompt containing details of the Android version of your phone. Try and see if that fixes the problem with your Facebook application.

Fourth solution: Delete the errant Facebook app then reinstall the newest version.

The last option and potential solution you can try on is app deletion. The Facebook app might have been totally corrupted and thus dysfunctional. What you should do then is to delete or uninstall the corrupted app and then download and install the latest version of Facebook app on your device. Here’s how:

  1. From the Home screen, drag the Arrow Up or slide your finger upwards from the bottom of the screen to launch the Apps screen.
  2. Scroll to and tap Play Store.
  3. From the Google Play Store main screen, tap the list symbol on the top-leftmost side of the search bar.
  4. Tap My apps & games.
  5. Tap Installed to view the list of recently installed apps.
  6. Tap to select Facebook from the list.
  7. Tap Uninstall then OK to confirm.

Wait until Facebook is completely removed then go back to the Home screen. You can restart your device to clear and refresh the phone’s memory and operating system and then go back to the Play Store to download and install the latest version of Facebook for your Nokia 8 smartphone.

Other options

With Android Oreo, you can use a new feature called Feedback to send bugs reports and feedback directly to Nokia, with your device’s details. This feature also allows you to record your screen to show the Nokia Support team exactly what’s been occurring on your device.

To get this done, just open the Feedback app from the Apps screen then follow the onscreen instructions to send bug reports and the issue you’re dealing with Facebook directly to Nokia team.

Alternatively, you can visit the Facebook Help Center to report the issue to the Facebook team and request further assistance and suggestions. There might be some advanced settings that must be edited from within the Facebook app, to fix the problem.
