Once upon a time, someone recommended Destiny 2 to me. I chose a warlock character, and it was a match made in heaven. I fell in love, and it’s been happily ever after ever since. Almost.

Since the launch of Destiny 2, I’ve amassed more than 1,100 hours of gameplay, which isn’t a whole lot compared to other hardcore players. Though, it is certainly the most amount of time I’ve played any game. Admittedly, it would be much worse if I didn’t quit and return so often.

It’s easy for me to get sucked into the Destiny universe. It’s everything I’ve ever wanted in a game. It has cooperative gameplay so I can play with friends. I can play PvP if I want, or I can just run around collecting planetary materials and exploring. The environment is so welcoming. I’m in awe of the graphics. The planets/moons are stunningly beautiful and realistic. Sometimes I just stare at the patterns and designs of the worlds, because they are absolutely incredible. How does Bungie do this? Their graphical designs are some of the best in any video game. Coupled with the beautiful music, I can get lost in Destiny 2 for hours on end. Is it my favorite game? Probably, yes.

As a live-service game, it is set up to be addictive. One quest step can lead to five more steps, and before you know it, you’re working on almost three pages worth of bounties and quests. And if you’re anything like me, you want every quest step completed and out of the queue as soon as possible. Sometimes the quests are even for weapons I’ll never use which will reside in the vault until it’s full and I need to clear space.

To enjoy Destiny 2, you kind of have to be okay with playing the same things over and over again. Like strikes, for example or the new Battlegrounds. You will kill the same bosses multiple times, until you just can’t stand it anymore.

I tend to play Destiny 2 obsessively until I just don’t. I came back to Destiny a month or so ago after taking many months off to play other games. I joined back up mid-season and now that the season is nearly over, I haven’t accomplished all that I intended to. I’m just about season level 100 now, but seeing how much I have left frustrates me. I realize this is completely my fault, I’m not placing blame anywhere except on myself, but knowing I need to kill 5,000 (exaggerated) more Brigs with a fireteam, in a specific public event, for a triumph and seal annoys me. By the way, how terrifying are those Brigs? Robots are scary.

Lately, I find myself playing solo so that I don’t have to bother anyone else to help me accomplish the things I want to get done. There are, however, many helpful fireteam members out there who love the game and don’t mind assisting. I just don’t like asking.

Why do I quit Destiny 2 so often? I don’t enjoy the daily grind. I don’t like being forced to play certain game modes, with specific weapons, to complete quest steps. For example, when I had to use Ticuu’s Divination bow for like a bazillion kills in Crucible. I don’t find it easy to get bow kills in Crucible. Shamefully, I had to look up online how to actually use the bow. Then I was able to get kills with it. Once I finally completed the quest, I saw that I wasn’t done as it had a catalyst I needed to earn. In the vault it went where it will sit indefinitely. I never want to use a bow in Crucible ever again.

It often feels like we work really hard to earn a weapon that is obsolete weeks later. Whose vault isn’t/wasn’t full of old, earned weapons we’ll likely never touch again? The inventory control is tedious and time-consuming. The loot system needs to be reworked. I do understand that some Destiny 2 players expect a reward for every menial task in the game, but then, we need to be able to carry more weapons with us. Or we need the ability to stow away gear on the go. Many new weapons I earn immediately get dismantled because I quite simply don’t have the room for them. I do feel bad that some are never even used. In Beyond Light, I’m still getting old armor and weapons, and if I have to dismantle one more Prophet Snow armor piece, I swear to…

Given my annoyances, what keeps me coming back? Quite simply, FOMO. Seeing friends enjoying the new content really piqued my interest for this season. I was excited to visit Europa and see what it had to offer, and there’s so much to do that it’s great! To enjoy a repetitive game like Destiny 2, I need new quests. New story missions will always keep me coming back as those are my favorite tasks. New armor helps as well of course. My warlock needs to be dressed to the Nine (see what I did there?). I love Seals, though I have only two, and I want more. Music. New environments. New characters… Hello, The Crow, I’m talking to you. Insert heart emoji here. New seasons with new triumphs. Looking for collectibles. The first thing I did in Beyond Light was look for the penguins, region chests, and shards. I get great enjoyment in exploration, and again, I find Destiny 2 incredibly immersive. I’m in love with the Destiny universe.

Despite the loot system, I have to say that Destiny 2 is in a pretty good state right now. There are plenty of quests and other content to work towards. I’m interested to see where the story goes and what new things will await us in the future. I’m probably going to take a break once I hit level 100 so I can play Fallout 76. But don’t you fret. Three things are certain in life. Taxes, death, and my return to Destiny 2.
