Who plays karen in the office

It would have been so easy for The Office fans to hate Karen Filippelli. After two seasons of waiting for Jim and Pam to get together, Karen showed up in season 3 as Jim's charmingly normal new love interest, prolonging the agony of shippers for another season. But something weird happened instead: Viewers adored Karen, and the new dynamic she brought to the show, leaving many upset when Rashida Jones left The Office behind at the end of season 3.

Even though Jones was a terrific addition to the cast, the exit of Karen felt inevitable, but Jones didn't leave The Office simply because Jim and Pam finally got together. In the "The Job, Part 2" episode of their Office Ladies podcast, Angela Kinsey and Jenna Fischer shared that their co-star exited the series in order to star in a brand new series produced by The Office co-creator Greg Daniels: Parks and Recreation.

Kinsey and Fischer revealed that in an alternate ending to "The Job, Part 2," Karen actually gets the job at corporate, which would have made her Michael's superior. Although the scene was shot, The Office stars said it was never going to air, because the writers knew Jones was heading over to Parks & Rec to play Leslie Knope's (Amy Poehler) best friend, Ann Perkins.

"It seems like they wanted to give themselves some choices. But we also know what was going on at this time, which is that Rashida booked her role on Parks and Rec," Kinsey explained. "And she was going to be starting that job. So, A, they needed, you know, finally Jim and Pam to be together, without any kind of distraction. And also, Rashida just got a great new job.

Jones continued to pop up on The Office for cameo appearances through season 7, but her role as Leslie's beautiful tropical fish of a best friend Ann allowed her to finally feel like she was part of an ensemble. In an interview on Off Camera with Sam Jones, the actress shared that while her Office co-stars were always kind to her, the nature of her role on the Dunder Mifflin-set comedy meant she never truly felt like a full-fledged member of the cast.

"I always felt like a guest star on The Office," she said in the interview. "Everybody was so nice to me, but I always felt like a guest star. I never felt, like, comfortable. I knew because I was like the small point of a love triangle that I would eventually just have to be sacrificed."

As much fun as it would have been to see Karen become Michael and Jim's boss on The Office season 4, it's hard to imagine anyone else playing Ann. Leslie's lovelorn best friend was an essential part of Parks and Rec, and the role gave Jones the chance to get in touch with her sillier side. But the best part of her relocation to Pawnee is that the actress found her very own TV family where she didn't have to worry about her role disappearing due to any pesky love triangles.

Actor Rashida Jones, star of the Netflix series BlackAF, has had many regular TV gigs in the past. Her role on The Office is one that is cited most often. But she wasn’t on the show for very long. Here’s why Jones never quite felt like a member of the cast.

Jones began playing Karen Filippelli, an associate at the Stamford, Connecticut, office of Dunder Mifflin, in season 3.

Former Scranton employee Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) has transferred to the branch, and he and Karen begin dating. But their lives are interrupted when Stamford closes and both (along with other members of the team) are transferred to Scranton.

Karen and Jim continue to date throughout the season. However, Jim is still in love with Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer), which becomes increasingly obvious. In the season finale, Karen and Jim vie for the same job at the corporate office, and offscreen Jim breaks up with her. He returns to Scranton and immediately asks Pam out on a date. They’re together from then on.

Jones’ character returned a couple of times

Like so many in The Office universe, Karen didn’t completely disappear. Jones is seen briefly in the season 4 premiere at the Scranton office following the breakup. But she’s gone just as fast. It’s revealed a few episodes later, in “Branch Wars,” that she’s now the regional manager of the Utica, New York, office.

In season 5, Karen is shown once again. She’s still working in Utica. Pam and Michael Scott (Steve Carell) visit the branch in the episode “Lecture Circuit.” Karen is revealed to be married and pregnant, and she and Pam are able to mend fences, closing the chapter on the character.

Jones says she ‘felt like a guest star’ on ‘The Office’

Most shows categorize its actors in three ways: main cast, recurring cast, and guest cast. However, The Office was a bit unique on this front. Many who you might have thought were part of the main cast were actually considered “starring cast.” While Jones was in nearly every episode of season 3, she was never part of the main cast.

Apparently, this was reflected in how she felt on set. “I always felt like a guest star on The Office,” she said in an interview with The Off Camera Show. “Everybody was so nice to me, but I always felt like a guest star. I never felt, like, comfortable. I knew because I was like the small point of a love triangle that I would eventually just have to be sacrificed.”

Jones was ‘pretty crushed’ when Ed Helms was promoted

Ed Helms, who played Andy Bernard, started at the same time as Jones, also as a Stamford employee who is transferred to Scranton. He was credited as a starring cast member in seasons 3 to 5 and then promoted to the main cast for the rest of the series run.

Jones said she and Helms “spent a ton of time together” when they both joined the cast. But it was tough for her when he was bumped up on the call sheet.

“I knew it was going to happen because there was emotionally nowhere else to go with my character. But I was pretty crushed,” Jones added.

Jones went on to star in ‘Parks and Recreation’

However, it all worked out for the best. When The Office writer Mike Schur and creator Greg Daniels teamed up to create a new show, Parks and Recreation, they thought of Jones for the role of Ann Perkins. And the rest is history. Though she left Parks and Rec in season 6, Jones returned, along with the rest of the main cast, for a coronavirus special episode in April 2020.

Karen Filippelli is a character in the NBC sitcom The Office. She is played by Rashida Jones.

Karen is introduced in the third season as a sales representative at the Stamford branch of Dunder Mifflin after Jim Halpert is transferred there. Along with Jim and other Stamford employees, she moves to Scranton following the merger of the two branches.

She is portrayed by Rashida Jones.

Biography

Like Jan Levinson, Karen is portrayed as an ambitious career woman – having gunned for a corporate vice president position, but is considerably more personable than Jan. Like Pam Beesly, Karen is objectified by several male employees at the Scranton branch.

Karen's ethnicity is deliberately made ambiguous and turned into a sort of running joke. The Italian ancestry implied by her last name is confirmed in "The Merger." But prior to that in the same episode, Dwight suggests that she may be Filipino. She is revealed to be able to speak French ("Grief Counseling") and Chinese (Deleted scene from "Gay Witch Hunt").

In her free time, Karen enjoys first person PC shooters, with her Call of Duty screen name being "KarenTheJimSlayer."

Season 3

Karen is first introduced as a co-worker of Jim's when he arrives at the Stamford branch. She initially thinks that he doesn't fit there and dislikes the way he looks at the camera, but eventually grows to develop a crush on him.

Throughout the rest of the season, Karen and Jim continue a steady relationship. Following job interviews in New York, Jim leaves Karen there and returns to Scranton, where he asks Pam out on a date. In a promo clip for season four, Karen states that "Jim dumped my ass and left me crying by a fountain in New York!"

Season 4

After returning from New York, Karen explains to Jim that she has worked too hard for her career and does not intend on leaving. However, the next day, her desk at the office is empty and she is nowhere to be seen.

In "Dunder Mifflin Infinity," a promoted Ryan tells Kelly that Karen had emailed him asking for a date. He claims he turned her down out of respect for his relationship with Kelly.

She later becomes the regional manager of the Utica branch, and develops a rivalry with both Michael Scott and Dwight Schrute, as she wants to out-do them.

Season 5

In season five, it is revealed that Karen is pregnant, which shocks both Jim and Pam. Michael asks if Jim is the father, but she tells them she is married to a man named Dan. She also learns Jim and Pam are engaged, and seems to be genuinely happy for them.
