What to do when Photoshop says selected area is empty?


Trevor....To do anything with selections, things are pending on whatlayer
you are working with.

To see the layers, go to WINDOW, SHOW LAYERS. If you're on a MAC, i just
dunno. Then, when in your layers, if you want to move something, be sure
that the layer with the stuff you want to select is highlighted (white, as
opposed to grey). That's it. It'll work for you then.

If I can understand you correctly then you have pixels on Smart Object layer which cannot be transformed. To be able to transform pixels you have created a blank new layer above it and you are trying to transform blank layer right? It won't work because there aren't actual pixels. Transforming pixels and cloning from some source are two different things.
