When you take a selfie photo on the iPhone camera, the viewfinder shows the mirrored version of the front-facing camera. This is because people are used to seeing themselves mirrored, such as in the reflection of a mirror. When the photo is taken though, the original source image is saved to the Photos library so the preview doesn’t actually match the final photo. In iOS 14, you can change this behavior.
Technically, the un-mirrored photo is true to life and the mirrored version is inaccurate. But most people see the un-mirrored version as wrong, and want the mirrored form to be preserved. This previously wasn’t supported by Apple’s built-in camera app.
This has been a longstanding omission on iOS and an entire sub-community of the App Store has popped up to offer mirror photo taking features. With iOS 14, Apple has finally integrated this simple setting into the main Camera app. It is kind of silly that Apple made us wait this many years for what boils down to a simple switch in settings, but here we are.
The new mirror selfies feature is available on iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max. Unfortunately, older iPhone models are not supported (Apple hasn’t explained why).
How to mirror selfie photos
- Open Settings.
- Scroll down and select Camera.
- Scroll down to the Composition section.
- Enable the ‘Mirror Front Camera’ toggle.
This setting is only available in iOS 14 and later so you will need to update your operating system if you are on an earlier version (iOS 14 will be released for all users in the fall). If you are stuck on iOS 13 or earlier for the time being, you can manually mirror your selfie photos after the fact, using the built-in photo editing tools in the Photos app.
How to mirror selfie photos on iOS 13 and earlier
- Open a selfie photo in Photos.
- Tap Edit.
- Select the crop controls, the third icon in the bottom toolbar.
- Press the Flip button, located in the top left of the screen.
- Press Done to save your changes.

If your local authority is able to compost such items then that is great! But if not, the cases need to be taken to an industrial composter. If there isn't a suitable industrial composter then you will need to take it to a waste disposal center where it will be converted into green energy.
You should not take it to the following places:
- put it in a landfill
- normal composting e.g. green waste
- plastic recycling center
Although the cases are environmentally friendly, there is a lack of services that are able to deal with such materials. However, they are increasing around the UK, and hopefully around the world as more and more companies use compostable packaging.
