I have no idea how somebody accomplished this, and nobody is fessing up, so I am left with a small hole in the wash basin in my bathroom. Is there any kind of porcelain filler or any similar product I can use to patch this up??

Unless it's a very expensive basin, I'd just replace it.
Epoxy filler will do the trick.

I don't want to disagree with Debbie in OK, but if the hole is in an area that is not constantly exposed to standing water, such as the sides of the sink, the repair will hold. If, on the other hand, it's near the drain the chances of success are much less.

The patch will, in time, begin to leak.

I assume it's porcelain over thin steel, in which case replace the basin...Lowes/Depot for about 80 bux....buy a China drop in insert....it is very common for these cheep builder's steel crap to fail like that, and there is no reprieve....if it's porcelain over cast iron, get some appliance touch up for the iron....

Photograph the old sink and go to a comapny that sells used bathroom supplies and get a cheap replacement. Any wrecking company should be glad to sell you one.

Someone will confess in 15 to 20 years. My 2 sons and 3 nieces, now ranging in ages from 22 to 28, fessed up about which one threw the rock that broke the window. They were all throwing rocks on the roof. The guilty one confessed a few years ago. She went to college on a softball scholarship for pitching! The other 4 never told on her even when all 5 of them got in trouble. They still watch out for each other and hang out together.

Throw a golf ball at it.
Just don't ask BP how to fix it.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I figured out what happened. Something was stick in one of the drawers underneath the basin and sticking out, somebody jammed the drawer shut, and a hair brush or something slammed into the sink from underneath, creating the hole.

I'd still replace it with a ceramic sink.
It's cheap and easy.
